Remodeling Process Tips: Getting Started

Remodeling your home is a big project and investment, but it should also be fun! Below are a few simple tips to help guide you in the “homework” process of remodeling. This is the time when you start to think about what you want your remodeling project to accomplish – including the style and function.

Look closely at the space you are thinking about remodeling. The first step is to decide what the main purpose of the remodeling project is. Are you looking to add extra space, upgrade the kitchen/bathroom, make changes for health reasons or just improve your living space? It is important to get input from all members of the household to find out their wants and needs are. Be sure to consider the short and long term implications of your renovation decisions. For example, will your choices increase or decrease the house’s resale value?

Map out the terrain. As you make your observations, write down your daily routine on paper. The best way to evaluate the functionality of a space is to create a clear picture of what works and what doesn’t work. As you do this, be sure to note all obstacles that keep your current kitchen, bathroom or other room from meeting your needs. Start to look at how you and your family use the space. Note traffic patterns and how important certain features are to all family members. It is important to decide what you want to change most and what you can keep or update later. Question everything. Don’t overlook the obvious.

Start gathering ideas. Look through magazines and save photos of rooms and floor plans that catch your eye. Collect fabric, wall covering and surface samples from design centers or supplier showrooms. Don’t limit yourself to what you think you can afford at this point. Build an idea file of the things that appeal to you. The idea file will help you create a context, a look and feel that best reflects your personal tastes and will act as a constant reference point for your plan.

Set a budget. You’ve seen what you like. Now you’re getting a sense of how the ideas you like coincide with how you actually use the space. The next step is to logically consider how much this will cost. Money is always an object, so this is a good time to determine how much you want to invest. What is the total amount you are willing to spend and how much can or are you willing to borrow? Establishing your priorities will help decide where to spend the money.

These are just a few simple tips to help you get started on your remodeling project. We can also help guide you through this entire process from beginning to end so that you don’t have to do it by yourself.

The article is called “20th Century Home Turns Modern” focusing on the family room addition, kitchen and closet we created for a Minneapolis family.

Downtown Minneapolis Loft Remodel

For the past several months we have been working on this extremely unique remodeling project in a downtown Minneapolis loft. It is in the Humboldt Loft building located on 2nd street right between the Guthrie Theater and the Mill City Museum.

This Minneapolis remodeling project has elements that have never been done before, which is always a welcomed challenge for Michael and what he does best. The unique and modern materials have been shipped in from all over the world adding a distinct feel to the already interesting design. Honestly, there is nothing else like this project in the Twin Cities area, and when it is complete it is going to be a must see. The architecture and design company we are working closely with is Domain Architecture & Design of Minneapolis. As the materials are installed and a more complete project can be seen we will be sure to add addition photos.
